Customer Review: A great value, excellent sound
We had this system for a year and a half, using it in a store seven days a week for about 10 hours/ day as a stereo system (never tried the video, that wasn’t what we got it for). After that much abuse it finally gave up on us and wouldn’t read discs, but we thought for the $170 it often runs at Target, it’s hard to beat, value wise. The sound is quite excellent, the speakers are very easy to connect and set up, the remote is great, the treble and bass are very distinct and clear, hard to go wrong here for the price.

Just picked this up for $128 at Target over Christmas. This is our first sound system and great for someone who knows nothing about electronics. We haven’t had any problems with skipping, humming or anything else. You can’t beat the quality for the price and we are very satisfied. Highly recommended for anyone wanting decent sound without spending big bucks!

I purchased this system over 2 years ago and have been pleased. Evidently this item is no longer carried by Amazon.com but if you are considering looking elsewhere this review may be helpful.

The system is good but not great. In the power department it delivers. The stereo sound is good as is the surround sound system. I am no expert in adjusting sound levels and so some movies I and my family watch seem to be a little loud in some speakers and soft in others. You can adjust the sound levels for the 3 front speakers but the rear two speakers have to be adjusted together. The cd player holds 3 cd’s and plays CD-R’s. The dual tape deck works fine but can get a little confusing since there are no push buttons to control playback or recording for each deck. You have to use the same buttons for each deck and while fliping back and forth between decks it can get confusing.

Now that the system is 2 years old the minor flaws then seem like major flaws now. The fixed wires for the surround sound speakers limit the positioning of the speakers. I must admit that the lines are at least 15 feet long but depening on your room layout that can still not be long enough. With wireless speakers becoming more and more popular these speaker wires seem really outdated. Next, the cd player does not play MP3’s. MP3 recordings are quickly becoming the preferred way to store audio material. The inability of this unit to play MP3’s instantly marks it as an outdated model. Lastly, the surround sound speakers are large and clunky. I don’t care for some of the small things technology promotes, like minature cell phones and micro sized universal remotes. However, I do like streamlined and small speakers. This unit speakers take up too much space and can clash with the decor of the room.

It may seem as though I am bashing this unit but I’m not. It has served our family well and delivers what it promises. I purchased a transition item that was on sale. I saved quite a bit of money and for me the savings out weighed the negatives I mentioned above. This system may not be for the serious stereo/home theater customer but it may do well for the beginner who needs a good system at a good price.

Worked ok for 2 1/2 months then…nothing. no seperate ff/rw button, too few inputs…very few outputs…poor rear speaker volume…disappointing! open and closing drawers problematic. I have a 15 year-old JVC 4.0 that works fine….this p.o.s. went back to the factory.

A very stylish system. It sounds good, but not great. If you plan to listen to it at low volumes there is a background hum that is quite annoying. At volume 4 and above, sounds really nice. Unfortunately, we bought it for our infant to listen to lullabies to get to sleep. We set it at 3 and there’s a slight hum that annoys me. I’m sure my daughter won’t mind, but if I had to do it over again I would not have purchased this one. There is no clock feature on this either.

Customer Review: 500 Watts really?
Overall a decent “beginner” unit, however don’t leave your unit on all the time like I used to. I had to replace one of the fans inside because it started making noise after about a year of “normal” use. I don’t like how the volume goes off completely when adjusting it quickly and the remote control button layout is absolutely horrible. It is loud for the size of the components however I have heard way better and louder units that are under 500 watts. Doesn’t have 6 speaker stereo without the 5.1 like other similar systems of its time. The system is also really slow to load cds, mp3 cds and dvds and it is also too slow to change between tv/aux/dvd/radio modes. Would I recommend this unit to a friend? NO. Would I ever buy another Philips dvd player or home theater system? Very Doubtful. Would I ever buy another Philips product at all? Only with great hesitation and after researching and testing the product before buying it.

I have had this one for the past two years with no issues. The sound quality is good and can play any disc that looks like a compact disc! I think 500 watt power is good enough for a family room as big as 16 x 18. I would recommend this to anybody who is looking for a start up home theatre.
