Customer Review: Pleasantly Surprised
I have to say that I bought the Philips LX8000 somewhat against my will. My wife wouldn’t allow me to put a full size home cinema system into the living room… So I started looking around at the more discreet slimline offerings and came across the Philips.
I really liked the styling and decided to buy without actually hearing it (risky…).
The sound is actually very good. The bass woofer does a marvelous job filling the room with fast deep bass and combiness very well with the small front and rears (it’s only when it’s switched off that you realise the fantastic job it does as the f & r’s offer no bass tones at all, yet together they sound great). The centre speaker offers good, clear vocals too.
My only gripe is that there is no graphic equaliser, just some presets - rock, classical, jazz etc… This can often lead to the rears producing some very tinny, high pitched sounds (very annoying) and when changing mode to, say, “classical”, you can get a very flat sound.
That apart most of the time the quality is great. Loud, spacy yet tight sound which loves high volume. Action movies are especially good.
It’s also great for playing music and handles MP3’s, SACD’s as well as ordinary CD’s very well.
The fact that you can watch your normal TV programs or Videos in Dolby Pro Logic surround sound, listen to AM/FM radio, play music CD’s/Super Audio CD’s as well as MP3 CD’s all from the one box shows just how flexible a system this is for the money.

Philips MX5600D 5-Disc DVD/CD Home Theater with 600 Watts Total Power Philips’s MX5600 DVD home theater system encompasses a Dolby Digital/DTS-capable surround sound receiver with an integrated 5-disc-DVD/CD player, along with everything from speaker stands to color-coded speaker wires included in the box. The system’s tuner offers 40 FM/AM presets for convenient tuning, and its DVD drive plays DVD, DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, and VCD/SVCD, in addition to MP3 CDs and JPEG image CDs/Kodak Picture CDs, making sure you’ll never without ample audio-visual entertainment.

Four matching satellite speakers reproduce the front and rear left/right channels from 5.1 surround programs (Dolby Digital or DTS), while a thin, wide, unobtrusive center-channel speaker sits atop your TV or shelf to root dialogue and other critical sound directly in front of you.

The MX5600 offers neither a powered subwoofer nor a traditional RCA subwoofer output. What it does have is clip-type speaker terminals for use with a passive subwoofer. These left/right outputs feed the 2 supplied “bass pipes,” which conveniently serve as speaker stands for the front left/right satellites while filling out the system’s low end and delivering full-bodied sound from both movies and music.

The system’s 100-watts-per-channel receiver delivers a total of 600 watts. The MX5600’s four 2-way satellite speakers and center-channel speaker are acoustically designed to match the tonal characteristics of the receiver. Front left, right, and center speakers are magnetically shielded to prevent any interference with your TV’s image.

Video features include picture zoom, multi-angle viewing, and parental lock. The receiver features 2 analog-audio inputs and one analog-audio output, along with a coaxial digital-audio output (great for exporting audio to a CD or minidisc recorder). Three video outputs (including the primary monitor output) accommodate a range of televisions, from sets with standard composite-video terminals to sets offering high-resolution component-video inputs.

Whether your living room is currently home to an HDTV or you’re merely thinking of “someday,” the MX5600 is equipped to deliver the full potential of your DVDs. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts.

Philips’s Cinema Center Speaker magnifies your movies while ensuring that what you hear is both natural and realistic. Cinema Center Speaker delivers spacious sound and brings a wider sweet spot through no less than 5 drivers positioned at different angles. These drivers give more depth in sound by clearly distinguishing front from background sound and action from dialogue so even the slightest sound detail will not pass by unnoticed.

Color-coded connectors provide a simple and user-friendly way to connect the speakers and subwoofer to the center unit of the home entertainment system simply by plugging the connectors in the matching colored-interface at the rear of the center unit.

Customer Review: Ancient piece of crap (Legacy Technology)
There is no hdmi input/output the subwoofers are incorporated into the rear speakers. I don’t know why people purchase this item. Not even a DVI connection (only component) what crap is that in todays day and age. For the same price you can purchase other items which don’t solely rely on legacy technology (old ancient technology used for nostalgic purposes). Its like buying a brand new computer with a printer port but without a USB connection. Absolutely pointless! You are purchasing an item that is obsolete today, not tomorrow, but today. Look elsewhere.
Customer Review: Underpowered Crap
I recently bought a 3-piece $125 40 watt Harman Kardon Soundsticks speaker system for my backup home office and it sounded so much better than my 9 year-old 4-piece $600 Sony system used in my primary home office that I decided to see if I could assemble a nice primary home office system on the cheap with today’s better technologies.

Customer Review: Decent entry level surround sound system
This is a decent entry level unit. This surround sound system is o.k. with the satellite speakers I would recomend that you get some decent floor speakers and a different set of satellite surround speakers, and sell the ones it comes with. The satellite speakers that it comes with are sh.tty only the center channel is worth keeping. With the whole new speaker setup you get alot more power. The reciever with the new speaker setup gives you enough power to not even have a subwoofer.Any Philips package you get will be even nicer with floor speakers and different surround speakers. Subwoofer is not a necesity with powerful floorspeakers. Surprising power for a 5×60 watt reciever.

This Philips surround sound system is truly the ONLY good audio package in a box. The included speakers offer superb clarity and reproduction given their dimunitve size. The best part of this system is you can get all the power and clarity of Dolby Digital Surround Sound for around 300 dollars. It sounds great in stereo too. The subwoofer included makes up for the small speakers bass handicap. I bought some JBL N28 speakers to replace the front speakers and it REALLY ROCKS. There is no other system on the market with better value or sound under 500 dollars.(Other than the Philips 550 watt version of this, 350 is plenty for my house but some may want the extra power for bigger rooms).
