Philips FW-D5 DVD Home Theater Compact Stereo System The Philips FWD5 shelf system with integrated DVD player is designed to enhance your home theater experience in one simple package. The amplifier provides 250 watts of output, with 50 watts per channel for clear and powerful sound. Its five-speaker Dolby Digital (AC-3) surround-sound system provides the latest industry standard for home theater sound from DVD movies. A dual jog-shuttle control for movie and sound adds a new dimension in fine-tuning control of movie and sound settings to suit your taste. Movie navigation includes scan, A-B, zoom, and return. Sound navigation includes virtual environmental control, personal settings, digital sound control, and dynamic bass boost. In addition, a three-step dynamic bass boost offers the optimal bass level for any kind of music, and the system comes with output signals available for connection to a subwoofer.

Adding to the FWD5’s capabilities is the three-disc CD changer. Providing more than three hours of continuous music, this changer is CD-R and CD-RW compatible, allows you to change two discs while playing the third, and offers standard programming, repeat, and shuffle playback options.

Other great features include a video/auxiliary input for connection of an accessory piece, such as a CD recorder, TV, or external cassette deck, and a digital AM/FM tuner with 40 station presets. A clock, alarm, and sleep timer are included so you can wake up to music from your favorite CD or radio station, as are three display modes showing different amounts of display on the LCD, including a night mode display that turns most of the system’s lights off. The FWD5 also incorporates an energy-saving standby mode that consumes just 2 watts of energy on standby (compared with the 10 to 15 watts most systems consume).

A variety of input and output types is built-in for greater expandability, including two video outputs, a digital coaxial output, one subwoofer connection, a headphone jack for private listening, and a microphone jack for voice recording.

Completing the system is the sleek design of the unit with an oversized multicolor digital display, sleek metallic finishing, and detachable speaker grilles. A 45-button remote control comes with the system and operates the volume, all CD and DVD functions, and all sound-enhancement features.

The Philips FWD5 comes with a one-year warranty on parts and labor.
Customer Review: Greatest Piece of Electronic Equipment I Own
This has got to be a complete work of art. The dvd player itself is worth 399 and is crystal clear, the sound is Crisp and the features are easy to use. Philips has really done its work with this Surround Sound System. This system makes my savage jungle beast neighbors envy. I have complaints from Police officers patrolling my neighborhood because of the sound quality on this bad boy. I have people peeking into my patio door to see where this incredible noise is coming from. This is definatley a piece of equipement worth buying. I used to work at regal cinemas (before I got fired for off duty behavior) and this sound system is way better than Regals Generic Surround sound. A very good buy!
Customer Review: A reason to watch movies again…
First, let me preface this with the fact that I didn’t pay a dime for this system. I won a big Amazon.com gift certificate, and I’ve been lusting after this type of system for a while.

My only complaint with the system is the complexity of the remote control, but that is to be expected with the number of features this unit provides. Besides being a great DVD player, you lovers of Asian films will adore the VCD capabilities. The unit puts out a beautiful picture (on my 25 inch Philips TV), and the sound is wonderful.

I’ve not blasted the speakers on this item yet, but at a setting of 10, I’m sure I’ve driven the neighbors nuts. The base is nice from the large speakers (similar to Aiwa systems), and the different options for theater settings is simple to use.

Overall, I’m absolutely thrilled by this unit, and I hope to start building my DVD collection because of the great performance from this system.

Customer Review: Philips, I am disappointed!
This stereo has been in a box since it broke almost a year ago. I have found Philips to be one of the worst electronics manufacteurs out there. Their products just don’t last under normal use. Plus, they really do not stand behind their product. I am tired of making Amazon do all my leg work so I am just going to eat the costs on this one and let Philip’s name get dragged through the mud. Shame on you Philips, shame on you!
Customer Review: Good product, good deal
I spent a lot of time hunting all the on-line merchants for a good quality tuner speaker combination package to use with my DVD, VCR, phono, cassette tape, and laserdisc players. Since this was for use in a less-than-ideal home environment, I didn’t want to spend top dollar, but I didn’t want junk either.

The MX966 turned out to be a great find. I am very pleased by the quality of all the components, including the speakers. This was the only under $500 system that I located that had phono inputs. It also has a good selection of s-video ports.

The only thing that confused during initial operation was that video is only distributed in the same output format as its input. That is if you send coax video to the tuner, it is not sent to the s-video output. A small thing, but if you have an older VCR that mean you will have to select a different TV input for viewing VCR tapes than is used for all the devices that produce s-video. Not a big deal, but it could have been clearer in the instructions.

Also, why is it that device makers don’t list the universal remote code for their OWN devices? I have 3 phillips devices (TV, TUNER, DVD) but the universal remote lists up to ten possible codes for each of those phillips devices. I still don’t have the right combination since sometimes when I an controlling one device, others also respond.

Awesome sound (compared to my old 2 channel stereo) with movies and CDs, and good quality construction and materials. I’m a happy camper!

Set up cost some time, but you get unique features for the money. Tivo and Replay users will appreciate the ability to connect to the internet for streaming audio. There is a Philips website with free content and subscriptions to various content sources.
